About the Role
The Product Manager will help Alpaca expand its brokerage infrastructure across European Union markets.
The successful candidate will be responsible for defining product strategy, developing the regional roadmap and working with engineering teams, regulators, partners, operations teams and institutional clients.
The position involves both strategic product planning and hands-on delivery. The Product Manager will help determine which capabilities should be developed internally, which should be acquired or integrated through partners, and how Alpaca should expand its brokerage offering across different European markets.
The role also involves working with European regulatory frameworks and market infrastructure, including MiFID II, MiFIR, ESMA requirements and national regulatory and tax frameworks.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The Product Manager will work on several areas of Alpaca’s European expansion, including:
- Expanding EU market access while meeting applicable regulatory requirements.
- Developing brokerage capabilities for equities and ETFs.
- Building connectivity to European trading venues and market infrastructure.
- Evaluating and integrating local European brokerage partners.
- Managing cross-border onboarding and passporting requirements.
- Developing tax-wrapper account functionality.
- Supporting tax-lot and cost-basis tracking.
- Managing dividend withholding and withholding-tax reclaim processes.
- Developing country-specific tax reporting capabilities.
- Coordinating Alpaca’s global platform with European market infrastructure.
What You Will Do
The successful candidate will:
- Own brokerage products designed for European markets.
- Manage the EU tax and tax-wrapper product area from development through implementation.
- Define wrapper eligibility and contribution rules.
- Oversee tax-lot and cost-basis tracking requirements.
- Develop solutions for withholding, tax reclaim and local reporting.
- Analyze market competition, regulatory requirements, ROI and build-versus-buy decisions.
- Develop and execute the European product roadmap.
- Write product requirements and work closely with engineering teams.
- Develop features that meet European regulatory and market requirements.
- Improve brokerage operational processes related to settlement, custody and clearing.
- Participate in customer discussions involving brokerage products and processes.
- Turn customer and market feedback into product improvements.
- Report product progress and results to internal and external stakeholders.
- Work with local operations teams to integrate Alpaca’s platform with European market infrastructure.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, finance or an equivalent field.
- At least 5 years of experience in product management, engineering, consulting, entrepreneurship or a related field.
- Experience or demonstrated interest in brokerage, capital markets or financial technology within the EU.
- A strong understanding of MiFID II and MiFIR.
- Knowledge of ESMA and the European capital markets environment.
- An understanding of how national tax and tax-wrapper rules affect financial product design.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Strong business judgment and the ability to balance stakeholder requirements, technology limitations, budgets and timelines.
- An interest in financial infrastructure and Alpaca’s expansion across Europe.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional experience that may be beneficial includes:
- Experience developing brokerage products for European markets.
- Technical experience working with APIs.
- Experience with financial services or trading platforms.
- Familiarity with CSDR, EMIR, T2S or central securities depository connectivity.
- Experience developing tax-wrapper or tax-reporting products.
- Knowledge of products such as PEA, PEA-PME, ISK or PIR.
- Experience with tax lots, withholding and local tax reporting.
- Experience with cross-border or passporting investment products.
- Knowledge of additional European languages.
- Experience working for a fintech company, startup or EU-authorized investment firm.
